Dr. Joanne Balkaran

Conservative Care. Root-Cause Medicine.

DPMMSFACFASFAMIFASCWSFAMOSSSRP

Dr. Joanne Balkaran is a foot and ankle surgeon with more than 17 years of experience in podiatric care. She brings together multiple advanced fellowship specialties under one practice, minimally invasive surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, regenerative medicine, and limb salvage, allowing patients to receive comprehensive care that addresses both the cause of disease and long-term healing. Her approach is conservative first, root-cause focused, and built on a multidisciplinary team model. She exhausts every available treatment option before recommending surgery, and when surgery is the right answer, she performs it with the smallest possible footprint.

Dr. Balkaran was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She served in the Canadian Armed Forces before pursuing a career in medicine. She earned her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine with high honors from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida, completed her residency at Palmetto General Hospital in Hialeah, and completed a Masters of External Fixation fellowship at the Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi in Milan, Italy. She holds advanced fellowship training in peripheral nerve surgery and microsurgery through the American Microsurgery and Orthoplastic Society (FAMOS), as well as certifications in minimally invasive surgery, wound care, and peptide therapy (SSRP).

Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Balkaran is a researcher, educator, and thought leader. She lectures at national and international conferences, has published peer-reviewed research, mentors podiatric residents and students, and is currently editing a medical textbook. She has served as Medical Director for the Special Olympics for over 15 years and has extensive experience caring for children and adults with special needs. She has participated in mission work and physician education programs in Canada, Trinidad & Tobago, and the Caribbean. She works with patients of all ages, from infants to older adults, and speaks English, Spanish, and French.

Areas of Expertise

Specialty Focus

PRP Therapy

Platelet-rich plasma concentrates your own growth factors and delivers them directly to damaged tissue, stimulating repair the body can no longer sustain on its own.

Umbilical Cord Biologic Injections

Advanced growth factor therapy from ethically sourced donor tissue, highly effective for chronic tendon and joint conditions that haven't responded to conventional treatment.

Peptide Therapy (SSRP)

Peptides support cellular repair, collagen production, tissue regeneration, and healing optimization. Integrated into both pre-surgical preparation and non-surgical recovery protocols.

MLS Class IV Laser Therapy

FDA-cleared dual-wavelength laser for deep tissue pain relief, inflammation reduction, and accelerated healing. Drug-free and non-invasive.

Red Light & Near Infrared Therapy

Photobiomodulation that supports mitochondrial energy production, reduces chronic inflammation, and accelerates cellular repair. The medicine is in the wavelength and accumulated dosing over time.

Fat Pad Restoration (Liposana®)

In-office procedure restoring the natural forefoot cushioning that thins with age and activity, addressing the source of ball-of-foot pain without surgery.

Bunion Correction (MIS)

3mm incisions, real-time fluoroscopic imaging, early walking same day. Precise correction with dramatically faster recovery than traditional open surgery.

Hammertoe Correction

Minimally invasive hammertoe correction with specialized instruments, less tissue disruption, faster healing, and reduced postoperative stiffness.

Healing Optimization Before Surgery

Every surgical patient undergoes laboratory evaluation, vitamin D and calcium assessment, circulation testing, diabetes evaluation, peptide optimization, and red light therapy before the procedure.

Early Weight Bearing

MIS techniques allow walking the same day in a surgical shoe. Return to regular shoes typically in 3 to 6 weeks, significantly shorter than traditional open surgery timelines.

Fellowship-Trained Peripheral Nerve Surgery

Advanced microsurgical fellowship training through the American Microsurgery and Orthoplastic Society (FAMOS). A subspecialty many practices are not equipped to diagnose or treat.

Team-Based Approach

Working with physiatrists, neurosurgeons, and advanced nerve testing specialists to deliver multidisciplinary care for complex nerve conditions.

Conditions Treated

Foot drop, peripheral neuropathy, neuromas, nerve entrapment syndromes, paresthesias, chronic nerve pain, post-traumatic nerve injuries, and nerve injuries following prior surgery.

Nerve Entrapment & Compression

Tarsal tunnel syndrome, Baxter's nerve entrapment, and other compression neuropathies, diagnosed with on-site nerve testing and treated with surgical decompression or regenerative approaches.

Gait Analysis & Biomechanics

Gait analysis, biomechanics evaluation, and foot type assessment to identify the structural factors driving injury, not just the injury itself.

Montverde Ballet Company

Foot physician for the Montverde Ballet Company. Extensive experience with the demands of dance, including forefoot loading, Achilles conditions, and injury prevention in performing artists.

Regenerative Sports Recovery

Regenerative biologics, MLS laser, and red light therapy accelerate healing for athletes seeking faster recovery without surgery.

Achilles & Tendon Conditions

Tendinopathy, partial tears, and insertional conditions managed with regenerative biologics and MLS laser before any surgical debridement or repair is considered.

Certified Wound Specialist (CWS)

Advanced wound management with sharp debridement, offloading, biologic scaffolding, and skin grafting for diabetic foot ulcers, venous wounds, and resistant chronic wounds.

Multidisciplinary Wound Team

Coordinating with primary care, cardiology, endocrinology, vascular surgery, and nutrition to address the underlying causes driving wound chronicity.

Limb Salvage

Prevention-focused limb salvage through circulation screening, arterial testing, deformity correction, advanced wound care, and vascular coordination. Our goal is to prevent amputation before limb loss occurs.

Body Optimization for Healing

Nutrition, diabetes control, inflammation reduction, and peptide support integrated into wound care protocols so the body is prepared to heal successfully.

Education & Outreach

International Lectures & Mission Work

International lectures and physician education programs in Canada, Trinidad & Tobago, and the Caribbean. Physician shadowing opportunities available.

What Patients Say

★★★★★

"I went to 3 different foot doctors until I found Dr. Balkaran. She assessed the problem, ordered an MRI, and determined I had a very serious injury in both feet. Neither of the other doctors had any clue."

"Dr. Balkaran was the 3rd podiatrist we saw to figure out why my daughter was having ankle pain. She listened and figured out the issue in about 15 minutes. The other doctors dismissed it as a sprain."
