Understanding Flat Feet

Flat feet (pes planus) occur when the arches don't develop fully or collapse over time. Many people with flat feet have no symptoms, but others develop significant pain and functional limitations, often radiating up the kinetic chain to the knee and back.

Treatment

The vast majority of flat feet are managed with custom orthotics, supportive footwear, physical therapy, and activity modification. Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction requires early intervention to prevent progressive collapse. Reconstructive surgery is reserved for severe, symptomatic cases that have failed comprehensive conservative management.
